baby girl's dress

Puff and shell stitches are combined to make an attractive open pattern for this dress. Directions are given for a size 1, size 2 is given in parenthesis.



Materials: Puritan, Mercerized, Crochet Cotton Yarn; 10 (11) balls in color of choice; Number 3 steel crochet hook or any size hook which will result in stitch gauge given; 4 small pearl buttons; 1/4 yard 1-inch velvet ribbon and 11/2 yards 1 1/2-inch velvet ribbon.

Abbreviations: ch (chain) sl st (slip stitch) p (picot) st (stitch) lp (loop) dc (double crochet) sc (single crochet) sp (space) sk (skip) dec (decrease) inc (increase)

Gauge: 3 puff stitches equal 2".

Bodice—Starting at waistline, ** ch 4, sl st in 4th st from hook for a p, ch 4, work a puff st in 4th st from hook—(to make a puff st: thread over, insert hook in st, pull through, * thread over, insert in same st, pull through, repeat from * once, thread over and work off 6 lps, thread over and work off remaining 2 lps), repeat from ** 34 (38) times, ch 4, sl st in 4th st from hook for a p, ch 1, turn. This is the puff st row.

Row 2: (Right side of work): Sl st in first p, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, * 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc (shell) in next p, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn, 36 (40) shells.

Row 3: Sc in lp of next shell, ch 3, sc in same lp for p * ch 4, puff st in 4th st from hook, sc in next lp of next shell, ch 3, sc in same lp, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn.

Rows 4, 5: Repeat rows 2 and 3.

The pattern is formed by rows 2 and 3 which are the puff st and shell st rows.

Row 6: Work 9 (10) shells for left half of back bodice, ch 1, turn. Work in pattern across the 9 (10) shells for 3 1/2 (4) inches ending with a shell row, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Work across 5 (6) shells for shoulder, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Work 5 (6) ps, cut thread.

Bodice Front: With right side facing, join thread in first free p and work 18 (20) shells, ch 1, turn. Work in pattern for 2 1/2 inches ending with a puff st row.

Start Neckline Shaping: Work 7 (8) shells, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Sl st to lp of second shell, sc in same sp, ch 3, sc in same sp, work in pattern to end of row, ch 1, turn.

Next .Row: Work 1 shell in each of 6 (7) ps, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Sl st to second shell, sc in same sp, work 4 (5) puff sts, ch 3, sc in same sp, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Work 1 shell in each of next 5 (6) ps, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Sl st in lp of shell, join front and back shoulders as follows: Ch 1, sl st in lp of first shell of back, * ch 1, sc in same lp of front, work a puff st, sc in next lp of front, ch 1, sl st in lp of next shell of back, repeat from * across shoulder ending with ch 1, sc in same lp of front, cut threads. Sk 4 (4) ps at front neck edge, join thread in next p, ch 3, shell in same p and work across next 6 (7) ps, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Work puff sts across 6 (7) shells, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Work 6 (7) shells, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Work 4 (5) puff sts, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Work 5 (6) shells, cut thread.

Right Half of Bodice—Join thread in next free p, ch 3, shell in p and work to end of row. Work even in pattern until armhole measures 3 1/2 (4) inches ending with a shell row, cut threads, turn.

Next Row: Sk 4 shells, join thread in lp of next shell, sc in same sp, work in puff st to end of row, turn.

Next Row: Work 5 (6) shells, ch 1, turn.

Next Row: Join back and front shoulders as follows: Sc in lp of first shell of back, * ch 1, sl st in corresponding lp of front, ch 1, sc in same lp of back, work a puff st, sc in next lp of back, repeat from * across shoulder ending to correspond, cut thread.

Sleeves—Sleeve is worked in two sections and joined same as shoulders. Work first row in same manner as first row of bodice repeating from ** twice. Work 2 rows even in pattern then inc 1 shell at beginning and end of row—to inc: Work (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same lp. Work 1 row even. Inc 1 shell at beginning and end of next row, then work even until section measures 5 3/4 (6) inches ending with a shell row, cut thread. Work another section in same manner and join 2 sections same as shoulders. Sew sleeve seam. Work 49 sc around cuff edge, join in first sc, do not turn.

Next Row: Working in sc, dec 17 sts evenly spaced (to dec sc— insert hook in st, pull lp through, insert hook in next st, pull lp through, thread over and pull through all lps at one time).

Next Row: Dc in each sc, join, cut thread.

Skirt—Starting at lower edge, work same as first row of bodice, repeating from ** until there are 90 (100) ps. Work in pattern until skirt measures 8 (9) inches ending with a shell row, ch 1, turn. Work 2 sc in lp of each shell, join in first sc taking care not to twist work—180 (200) sc.

Next Row: Join skirt to bodice as follows: Ch 3, sl st in base of first p of left half of bodice back. * Dc in each of the next 5 sts of skirt, sl st in base of next p of bodice, repeat from * around, join in third st of ch, cut thread.

Finishing: Sew back seam of skirt. Sew sleeves in position. Work two 1 1/2 -inch chs for belt loops. Fasten in position at each side for belt.

Neck Edge: With right side facing join thread at start of opening on left half of back of bodice and work 31 sc to top of opening, 26 sc across back of neck, work 10 sc with ch 1 between every 2 sc on side of neck, work 15 sc across front with ch 1 between every third sc working the sc into p lps. Work opposite side to correspond, join in first sc.

Next Row: Sc in first st, dc in next st, ch 2 for buttonhole, * alternating sts work 1 sc, then dc in each of next 9 sts, ch 2 for buttonhole, repeat from * twice, then continue in sc-dc pattern around remainder of neck edge and back opening, join, cut thread. Sew button in place. Finish with bow at neckline.
